Visible light is faint at night, but invisible infrared ray is still abundant. Infrared night vision helps people to observe, search, aim and drive vehicles at night. It has active type and passive type. The active type illuminates the target with an infrared searchlight and receives the reflected infrared radiation to form an image.

The passive type does not emit infrared light, relying on the target's own infrared radiation to form a "thermal image", so also known as "thermal imager".

Because there is an absolute temperature in nature (minus 273.15 degrees Celsius), any object above this temperature radiates infrared light outward. Thermal imaging scopes work by detecting differences in heat energy and then showing these differences on a screen. This allows the hunter to spot animals in the dark and can even be used to detect objects in dense foliage or behind obstacles.

With both of these types of scope, hunters can identify animals in the dark easily and accurately. This gives them a serious advantage when hunting, as they can identify game more quickly and accurately, thus increasing their chances of a successful hunt.
